Many local New Yorkers refer to The Giants as the New York Football Giants. This was done in the beginning history of the team to distinguish it from the professional baseball team that had the same type of name. Even though the baseball team has been long gone since 1957, the team continues to use "New York Football Giants" as its legal corporate name Commanderinchief Jersey. Some of the nicknames that the team goes by are the "G-Men," "Big Blue, "Jints," "Big Blue Wrecking Crew," and the "Big Blue".
The ancient history of the team is very colorful. They played their first game against the "All New Britain" in 1925 in New Britain, Connecticut. They defeated the team with a score of 26-0 with a crowd of about 10,000 looking on. They had a successful first season with an 8-4 record in 1925.
In their third season, the team finished with a very good record at 11-1-1 and received the NFL title. There were no play-offs or super bowl in those days. In 1928 they had a bad year and the owner bought the whole team of the Detroit Wolverines and merged the two teams. In those days, college football was all the rage and many did not think that pro players were as good as their college counterparts. So in 1930, the Giants played a team of Notre Dame All Stars to raise charity money and to also prove to many that pro players were the superior ball players. Famous Knute Rockne was the leader of the All Stars but they still got beat by the pro team and in fact the All Stars did not even get to score. This is the game that is credited with establishing the legitimacy of the professional football game as we know it.
So in my mind, the NFL and America's favorite sports past-time have a lot to be thankful for due to the New York Giants. Writer and editor, Freddie Brister, is a former high school football coach of 25 years. His love of the game of football is reflected in his words and memories of growing up in the South and playing football in the back yard with his brother, cousins and neighborhood friends. His biggest thrill is watching former high school players he has coached play at the college level. His favorite pastime is watching NFL football on tv and attending the games in person every chance he gets Packers pro shop. Freddie Brister is a huge fan of the NFL and the New York Giants.
